After graduating high school, Julia Grommes worked at Vetter for a year in Visual Inspection. It was during this time that she learned more about the company and started preparing for the future. The natural sciences have always fascinated her is the reason why she ended up at the Occupational Safety Studies program – now called Sustainable Science and Technology – at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Karlsruhe.
Dual study offers variety and practical experience
The three-year dual study program provides the perfect mix of academic theory and practical company experience. Participants change locations every quarter: after spending three months in the company, they spend three months in the student city of Karlsruhe. Students not only benefit from a varied daily routine but also receive a fixed salary throughout their studies.
The first three semesters at university give the students a solid foundation in mathematics, applied physics, chemistry, and computer science. Because she specialized in occupational safety, Julia also studied ergonomics, occupational health and safety law, psychology, and business administration.

Alternating between the practical and theoretical phases allowed us to apply our newfound knowledge directly within the company. At the same time, we were able to explore and delve deeper into the practical aspects of the theory.

The practical phase at Vetter in Ravensburg
During the practical phase, students belong to the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) department. Julia got to know colleagues from the production, technology, and laboratory departments.
What happens after graduation?
Julia Grommes joined the Occupational Safety Team as an Occupational Safety Specialist after graduating. She prepares risk assessments and analyzes the safety aspects of a wide range of work areas, activities, and machines, including photoelectric barriers, protective gloves, and respiratory equipment. She identifies her colleagues' needs and concerns and actively works to resolve those issues.
I've been in almost every department because of my job. I can make a real difference here and improve the working environment for employees. That feels good.
